U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) tested and approved life jackets should be worn by everyone especially when in or around open or natural bodies of water, and when boating. Life jackets should be sized appropriately for the wearer.

A5: can be discussed by asking open-ended questions about experience with swimming and ability to get to safety in water. You can give families education/resources on the 5 layers of protection (fencing, supervision, swim lessons, life jackets, CPR)!

Remember the “3 C’s” of Supervision:

💧Close: Within an arm’s reach
💧Constant: Uninterrupted attention
💧Capable: Can swim & knows CPR with rescue breaths

And when possible, swim near a lifeguard!

Kids with disabilities like Autism and Down Syndrome are at a significantly higher risk for both fatal and non-fatal drowning. Families & pediatricians across the US are advocating for accessible, affordable swimming lessons — including adaptive lessons.🌊

Swimming safety: Touch supervision (keeping your child within arm’s reach) means you’ll be there in case of trouble. Drowning is quick, silent, and final, so staying close means staying safer.
