Canada has one of the largest known reserves (measured and indicated) of rare earth minerals in the world, estimated at over 15 million tonnes. Why would our currency be linked to oil? That's remarkably stupid. We are rich as hell in the hottest commodity.

New @probonoecon report out today looking at what the economic downturn associated with the pandemic might mean for charity funding. THREAD…

If we look back to the period after the financial crisis, we see that charity income seemed to track GDP pretty closely

I understand that the are enamored with austerity, but am I the only one curious that they never point to examples of jurisdictions where austerity has actually been effective? 🤔

Not to put too fine a point on it, but our entire economic system is heavily weighted against workers.

Unions simply allow those workers to tip the balance a little bit in their favour.

The flexibility of part-time employment is key during recessions to help support recovery. CERB and CEWS need to facilitate this type of work. So far, the maps show last month employment gains are mainly driven by full-time work.

That might seem like a great sign, for people who see capital investment in digging up oil and gas as a good thing and as a positive economic indicator. And if you’re one of those people, there’s something else you should know.

Everyone knows chocolate is very bad for dogs. But there are many less known foods that are actually also harmful to pets.

Let's hope mining for these rare earth minerals is done mindfully in Canada and used to build a sovereign wealth fund similar to how Norway used their oil reserves to amass over $1 trillion. We have a real opportunity to do this correctly.

Another good idea from Ireland: step in to pay the wages of child care workers. Parents save on fees and spots are guaranteed when centres reopen

Proud my EBI team at Toronto Region Board of Trade made Maclean’s Magazine Chart Week 2022! We used TELUS Insights data to gauge economic impact & recovery of business districts across TO region using “foot traffic” of workers as a proxy of ec activity. Nice work Saad Usmani & Zaki Twaishi

Part-time employment growth, usually seen during recessions, has not seen even growth nationally. Negative growth in areas incl. Ontario and Saskatchewan. A regional strategy for CERB/CEWS can help uncover and address unique regional issues

Because?! Austerity has been proven by economists, worldwide, to be detrimental to economic growth and prosperity 100% of the time. It. Is. Counterproductive. No good has ever come from austerity measures.

The BoC continues its obsession with workers trying to earn fair pay, but is now vaguely admitting that “corporate pricing behaviour” plays a role in inflation.
